Feet Retreat. Incredible.

This past weekend at Feet Retreat I had the honor of debuting a new contra dance DJ: DR Shadow, also known as Ben Smith from the Mean Lids (who were amazing and transcendent). I got to play three of his tunes along with my usual campy pop music, and it was a big hit.

AND he gave me permission to play them at the Durham Rushfest on October 12! Bam. The coolest.

Getting ready for Feet Retreat!

I'm so excited to debut some songs from a brand new contra dance DJ! I may or may not have been listening to some of those songs on repeat all day. (ahem)

The Charlotte dance was amazing. I love those folks. And Sheldon's lighting. YES.

Two of the local Charlotte dancers are moving to Denver, CO, so I changed up my set list and played them "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) / The One That Got Away / Don't Stop Believin'."

What happens when the sheriff comes to your dance?

You invite him to dance, of course!

I was getting ready for Rushfest at Cool Mountain Contra when I looked over and there were a bunch of police by the door. My first thoughts were "Oh crap! Someone called the cops because of the noise and we're in TROUBLE and we'll NEVER get to dance here AGAIN!"

I raced over to see what was up -- there was a stern looking senior officer type, an intrigued gentleman with "SHERIFF" on his shirt, and several other deputies.

"Hey fellows!" (Super casual, as always), "How's it going?"
"We saw the signs for a 'contra dance' and decided to check it out."

We're not in trouble! Excellent!

"Oh! ...Well you should come dance with us!"

The stern-looking gentleman gave me a clear NO face, and the sheriff also declined, but looked eagerly over my shoulder.

And lo and behold, for the last dance of the evening with Andrew, Noah, and Dana, he was out on the dance floor, flak jacket, gun, and all.

I raced over before my set: "But wait, there's more!" And dashed off again.

Damned if they didn't stay for Rushfest. Slowly I started to see more unfamiliar gentlemen, some police, and then some wearing shirts that said "Firefighter."

Apparently there was nothing going on in Elk Park that Saturday night, and I imagine the radio call was, "You guys have got to see this."

Someone counted five police and two state trooper cars in the lot around 1am.

I'm so proud.

Guys. Guys.

Have you been to the Pavilion at Serenity Knoll in Jonesborough? It. Is. Amazing.

And I got to Rushfest there! It was glorious. And smelled like honeysuckle. You should dance there. Really.

Fall LEAF 2014

I was at Lake Eden Arts Festival. How amazing is that? SO amazing.

All these people kept popping their heads in to see what was going on, and we had a couple of hoop dancers, and even a guy with glowing clubs juggling on the side. Ed Howe of Perpetual E-Motion made me sound great, I heard great things from dancers, and I had THE BEST time, like I do every time!
